Modelling terrestrial ecosystems response to environmental changes

You will join the land-ecosystem modelling group (LEMG; https://lemg.imk-ifu.kit.edu/) in our Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research - Atmospheric Environmental Research (IMKIFU) in Garmisch-Patenkirchen. You will be developing and applying advanced model systems (i.e. the dynamic global vegetation model LPJ-GUESS or coupled socio-economic/ecological models (LandSyMM)). You will help to solve questions of utmost importance, posed by the combined challenges of climate change, land-use change and biodiversity loss.

Your tasks include:

  • Lead and contribute to simulations and analyses of model output, for instance in context of a number of EU projects (ForestPaths: https://efi.int/news/forestpaths-project-forest-based-policy-pathways-towards-climate-neutral-society-2022-06-13; wildE: https://www.wild-project.eu/about) and other initiatives
  • develop ideas for exciting research within the context of these projects
  • develop new modelling features such as agroforestry
  • lead and contribute to publications arising from the work
  • contribute to general tasks in the team such as teaching, website maintenance or project reports

The announced position also includes close cooperation with colleagues at IMKIFU, Lund University (Sweden), Edinburgh (UK), Western Sydney (AU) and many others worlwide. You will have the oppurtunity to further enhance your academic career through leading tasks and cooperating in the ongoing projects and by developing project proposals, jointly with the head of the group.

Persönliche Qualifikation

You have a university degree (PhD) in environmental sciences, meteorology, information technology, atmospheric physics, ecology or any related field. We also expect practical knowledge of modern coding and data-analyses languages (e.g. C/C++, Python, R, ...) and proven track-record in running simulations and quantitative data-analysis (GIS is insufficient).  Above-average publication record and having applied successfully for funding previously is an advantage. You will need to be willing to travel and have very good spoken and written skills in English. 

Salary

Salary category 13, depending on the fulfillment of professional and personal requirements.

Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d)
in the field of “Modeling of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Agricultural and Forest Systems of Germany - Agri-For-Live"

The announced position is to be occupied in our Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research - Atmospheric Environmental Research (IMKIFU) in Garmisch-Patenkirchen. It is embedded in the BMBF-funded collaborative project "Integrated Greenhouse Gas Monitoring for Germany (ITMS, https://www.itms-germany.de)" and will be carried out in close collaboration with the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Thünen Institute. ITMS is designed to enable Germany to operationally monitor the sources and sinks of the three most important greenhouse gases (GHG) CO2, CH₄ & N₂O via an independent integrative measurement and modeling approach. The collaboration project will support data-driven GHG monitoring and increase the transperency of climate mitigation measures.

The joint project Agri-For-Live deals with three central aspects of ITMS:

  • high temporal and spatial resolution of activity data from agriculture, forestry and land use (AFOLU)
  • emmision of greenhouse gases (GHG) from livestock farming
  • biogeochemical modelling of GHG exchange processes in agricultural and forestry ecosystems to improve the spatial and temporal resolution of bottom-up GHG inventories

Your tasks include:

  • improve the biogeochemical model LandscapeDNDC (https://ldndc.imk-ifu.kit.edu) and develop a module for the process-based modeling of  N₂O freeze-thaw events
  • calibrate and evaluate the model based on inforamtions gained in N₂O stable isotope measurements
  • compile input datasets with different spatial and temporal aggregations for two federal states
  • apply LandscapeDNDC at the state and national scale
  • carry out uncertainty analyses by comparing the model simulations of LandscapeDNDC when using input data in different spatial and temporal resolutions
  • interpret and discuss model results in close collaborations with ITMS project partners

Persönliche Qualifikation

You have a university degree (PhD) in physics, environmental sciences, geoecology, chemistry or any related field. We also expect sound programming skills (e.g. C/C++, Fortran, SVN, Git, Python, R, Bash) and experience in ecosystem modelling.  Existing knowledge of spatial analysis and GIS systems as well as the understanding of biogeochemical carbon and nitrogen cycles in plant-soil systems is an advantage. Further we expect english language proficiency, the ability to write scientific publications as well as strong communication skills and teamwork.

It is  embedded in the BMBF-funded collaborative project "Integrated Greenhouse Gas Monitoring for Germany (ITMS,https://www.itms-germany.de)" and will be carried out in close collaboration with the German Peatland Science Center (https://www.hswt.de/en). ITMS isdesigned to enable Germany to operationally monitor the sources and sinks of the three most important greenhouse gases (GHG), CO2, CH₄ & N₂O, via an independent integrative measurement and modeling approach . The collaboration project will support Data-driven GHG monitoring and increase the transparency of Climate Mitigation Measures.

Your tasks include:

  • improve  the biogeochemical model LandscapeDNDC (https://ldndc.imk-ifu.kit.edu) and develop a module for the process-based modeling of organic soils
  • calibrate and evaluate the model and assess uncertainties
  • develop a GIS-based modeling framework for the federal state of Bavaria and Germany
  • calculate GHG emission inventories of organic soils for Germany with uncertainty analysis
  • interpret the model results in close collaboration with peers from both the bottom-up and top-down modeling community
