Research Grants
1989 - 2010 | Before moving into my present position in Germany (2007), I held research grants from Switzerland (Swiss National Science Foundation) and US Sources (primarily from US-DOE) for a total of over US$ 6.1 Million |
2007 - | Since moving to Germany, I have been leading a research institute with an annual operating budget that increased from 5 M€ (2007) to 7 M€ (2025). This increase is the result of successful competitive proposals every 5 (now 7) years. In 2021 I also assumed the role of Speaker for Topic 1 “The Atmosphere in Global Change” in the Helmholtz Research Program “Changing Earth – sustaining our future”, in collaboration with research groups from 5 research centers of the German Helmholtz Association. Currently, the annual operating budget of Topic 1 amounts to about 50 M€, supporting 270 FTE positions. In addition, I have held research grants for a total of over 6 M€ from German Federal, and Bavarian funding agencies. These grants include funding for the Helmholtz (Graduate) Research School MICMoR (Mechanisms and Interactions of Climate Chance in Mountain Regions, 2011-2017, value: 1.8 M€. |
Supervisiory Experience
1997 - 2016 | Primary research supervisor of 13 Postdoctoral Fellows/Professional Staff (at ETH Zurich, IU Bloomington, KIT). All of these continue to hold positions at research institutions; 4 former Postdocs now hold faculty positions at public universities. |
1989 - 2025 | Primary research supervisor of 15 Ph.D. students (at ETH Zurich, IU Bloomington, KIT; 14 complete, 1 in progress) and 7 Master’s students. Of these, 9 individuals continue to hold positions at research institutions (2 in faculty positions at public universities) |
