Prof. Hans Peter (HaPe) Schmid is Director of the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research - Atmospheric Environmental Research (IMK-IFU, KIT-Campus Alpin) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and is also a full professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He is a member of the Program Board of the Helmholtz program "Earth in Transition" and spokesperson for Topic 1 "The Atmosphere in Global Change". HaPe studied geosciences at ETH Zurich and received his doctorate from the University of British Columbia in Canada (1988). He then worked as a scientist and lecturer at ETH Zurich (1989-1996). Before coming to Germany (2007), he was a professor in the Atmospheric Science Program at Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana (1996-2007). In 2023 he received the Award of Excellence in Biometeorology from the American Meteorological Society.
