What will sustainable grassland farming look like in the future?
At the European Democratic Party's grassland workshop, Dr. David Piatka and PD Dr. Michael Dannenmann discussed with representatives from politics, science, and agricultural practice how to shape a sustainable grassland farming system for the future that fulfills both economic and ecological functions in a warming climate.
Two KIT presentations at the Grassland event of the European Democratic Party
The European Democratic Party invited experts from science, agricultural practice and politics to the symposium “Future (Permanent) Grassland – Prospects for Agriculture, Climate, and Society” on December 5, 2025, in Irschenberg. The goal of the event was to jointly shape future perspectives of grassland in the alpine region. It was organized on the initiative of MdEP Christine Singer with financial support from the European Parliament.
Within two of the overall four scientific presentations, Dr. David Piatka and PD Dr. Michael Dannenmann from KIT – Campus Alpin provided detailed decision support for agricultural practice and legislation based on the latest results from KIT grassland research projects:
- KUHMUS–Beweidung: Greenhouse gas reduction in dairy farming (Dr. Piatka)
- Towards more sustainable organic grassland fertilization (PD Dr. Dannenmann, with findings of the projects SUSALPS, BE_BioMON and BLIK II projects)
The intense discussions after the presentations showed the great potential of direct exchange between practitioners, scientists, and politicians to develop and implement sustainable grassland management in Europe in order to maintain both economic and ecological grassland functions in a changing climate.
